Calif. Motorcycle Officer Hit by Drunk Driver

An Elk Grove police officer was hit by a drunk driver Saturday night while conducting a traffic stop on Bruceville Road.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

An Elk Grove police officer remains in the hospital after being hit by a drunk driver, according to police.

Just before 11 p.m. Saturday night, the officer was stopped at the side of the road on Big Horn Boulevard and Bruceville Road in Elk Grove on a routine traffic stop when he was struck by a car, police said.

At the time, the officer was off of his police motorcycle. The officer's partner ran after the driver, who eventually stopped, police said

The suspected drunk driver has been identified as 24-year old Matthew Layug of Sacramento. He is in jail and has been charged with driving under the influence.

The injured officer suffered a compound fracture to his right leg.
