PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. --

A former Florida Atlantic University police officer accused of shooting a 29-year-old woman in her Boynton Beach apartment tried to kill himself in jail.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Davis told WPBF 25 News that Jimmy Dac Ho tried to hang himself Thursday morning. Ho was taken to Wellington Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

Boynton Beach police said Ho shot Sherri Carter once in her stomach and once in her neck.

Police were called to the Marina Village condominium complex on Casaloma Boulevard shortly after 7 p.m. Monday after a friend said she hadn't heard from Carter in some time. When officers arrived, they found Carter had been shot.

According to the arrest report, Carter was a private escort and Ho was her client.

Police said Ho told them he thought Carter was reaching for a knife, so he handcuffed her and shot her during a struggle.

Carter's attorney said his client was only defending himself.

"Just from reading the police report, it's a self defense case and there's nothing to dispute what his allegations are," attorney Craig Williams said.

Carter was taken to Delray Medical Center, where she remained Wednesday.

Ho was placed on administrative leave Tuesday and resigned later in the day.
