MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --

A K-9 dog chasing a burglar attacks a running firefighter.

Police in Rutherford County said a burglar stole more than $10,000 worth of jewelry. A witness called the fire department, which called police.

A police dog started chasing the burglar, who stopped and put his hands up. That's when a firefighter came running in pursuit of the burglar.

The dog turned and attacked him. He bit the firefighter five or six times on his legs and arms. The fireman is home recovering.

Police said the dog was doing what he was trained to do and that they are sorry for what happened to the firefighter.

Internal Affairs is investigating, but police said, preliminarily, the dog did nothing wrong.
