BRISTOL, Conn. --

Bristol Mayor Art Ward placed the police chief on administrative leave effective immediately.

Ward said Police Chief John DiVenere was placed on administrative leave pending further review of internal investigations that were requests by Ward's office.

Police Capt. Eric Osanitch was set to assume the role of acting chief of the Bristol Police Department.

Ward said that because the matters behind the decision were sensitive, he would not release details on why DiVenere was placed on administrative leave.
