APOPKA, Fla. --
An Orange County deputy opened fire on a man, killing him Friday evening, after police said the man shot a deputy-in-training with a BB gun at an Apopka home.
A SWAT team was sent to the home on White Cloud Avenue in the Rock Springs mobile home park after a report that a man was inside bashing out windows and being violent, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
"Apparently he had been punching out the windows of the house and going in and out of the home," said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.
OCSO officials said the man was identified as 29-year-old Gregory A. Horne, who is mentally ill. They said Horne's father called 911, and when deputies showed up, the 29-year-old pulled out a BB gun and fired a shot.
The BB hit a Deputy-in-training Rebbeca Mcnerney in the arm, OCSO officials said. The BB gun looked like a rifle, so Deputy Bryan Barbour returned fire, officials said.
Police said three shots were fired, and Horne was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several units in the mobile home park were evacuated as police worked to clear the scene.
