SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said deputies busted a cockfighting ring in the middle of a fight Sunday afternoon.
Deputies said they arrested four people from the cockfighting arena on River Road. Officers said the four are now facing animal cruelty charges in the Sacramento County Jail.
Deputies said when they arrived at the scene, about 50 people surrounded the arena during the cockfight. The people scattered as they saw the deputies arrive.
According to the Humane Society, 50 roosters were found waiting in cages to fight, while 12 birds were killed in the cockfights. The Humane Society said all birds found at the arena have been confiscated.
Police said they are still looking for the person who planned the fight.
