KOKOMO, Ind. --

A Howard County sheriff's deputy and another man were hospitalized after a crash near Kokomo early Saturday morning.

The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. on U.S. 31 near U.S. 35, the Howard County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputy Keith Chesshir was responding to another accident scene when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by James Smith, of Dixon, Ky., police said.

Witnesses said Smith's truck hit black ice, causing him to lose control and cross the median, striking Chesshir's patrol car in the driver's side door.

Chesshir and Smith were both taken to a nearby hospital, but both were expected to be released later Saturday.
