Fla. Child Hides in Closet, Reports Break in to Cops
HIALEAH, Fla. --
Cynthia Valdez, 12, is still shaking, but now nervously smiling, after a close call in her home.
It began just after 1 p.m., when she heard someone break into her front door.
Cynthia hid in the closet as two men started rummaging through her father's jewelry.
She then called 911.
“There's somebody, there's a guy -- I'm home alone -- and he's knocking on my door. Please, send me somebody here quick!" she told the operator. As officers rushed to the scene, Cynthia remained hiding. But, the intruders came close to catching her.
“He's in the house, he's lifting every piece!" she said to dispatchers.
The operator asked, "Do you hear him, like the door opening in your room?" "Yes!" she responded.
Before they could get to her, though, the police got to the house and arrested both men.
Police say Cynthia was not only brave, but a hero.
"Were you worried they were going to hurt you?" local 10's Ross Palombo asked.
“Yeah," said Cynthia. "But, I think I did great, nothing happened to me."
