SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. --
A former Spartanburg County detention officer is out of jail after being arrested on drug charges.
Spartanburg County Detention Center Director Larry Powers said Thomas Douglas Brown, 42, brought prescription drugs inside the jail and did not have a prescription for them.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said Brown told investigators he was taking the prescription pain medication for his back.
Wright also said deputies found a small amount of marijuana at Brown's home, which led to a simple possession charge.
Brown faced a judge Thursday night and was released on a personal recognizance bond of $12,500.
Brown had been employed at the jail since Oct. 27, 2007.
After his arrest, Brown was terminated from his position as a detention officer.
He is charged with possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, carrying contraband in the jail and simple possession.
