Officer Donald Joshua Newman of the Jemison Police Department was killed Saturday night while responding to an emergency call, reports WSFA 12 News.

Police said heavy rain may have been a factor when Newman lost control of his car on Alabama Highway 31 and hit a power pole. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Chief Shane Fulmar told the station, "Officer Newman was the type of Police Officer that every department in the country would have wanted. He was very dedicated, respectful, and the mirror image of a professional. Officer Newman was not only an asset to the City of Jemison but an asset to our profession of law enforcement abroad. He will be greatly missed here within the Jemison Police Department and the City of Jemison. Our heavy hearts go out to Officer Newman's family."

Officer Newman is survived by his wife and four year-old son.
