Officer Jimmy Brooks, 60, was the former chief of Vicksburg Police Department.

A Madison police officer was killed Wednesday in a motorcycle crash, the Madison County coroner said.

The crash happened at 6:40 a.m. on Hoy Road near Highway 51, Madison County emergency officials said.

Officer Jimmy Brooks Sr., 60, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died, Coroner Alex Breeland said.

Brooks was driving his personal motorcycle and was on his way to work, Madison police said. The crash is being investigated by the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Brooks was a veteran officer with more than 10 years of service at the Madison Police Department. Prior to that, he spent 21 years with the Vicksburg Police Department, retiring as chief in 1992.

Flags were flying at half-staff at the Madison Police Department on Wednesday.

"Our thoughts, prayers and support are with the Brooks family at this time of loss," Madison Police Chief Gene Waldrop said in a news release
