CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --

Thousands of crushed beer cans were scattered across Highway 30 Monday morning, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported.

Police said the semi driver was headed to a Cedar Rapids recycling center around 10:30 a.m. when the back door on his truck flew open and the cans started falling out.

Police and Iowa Department of Transportation workers used brooms, shovels and pitchforks to push the debris, which stretched for about a quarter-mile, to the shoulder of the roadway, reported the Gazette.

A snow plow was also used to help clean up the scene before crews arrived to pick up more cans by hand.
