Public Safety Lieutenant

The Lieutenant is responsible for supervising, planning and coordinating the activities and operations of assigned public safety services and activities of the Department of Public Safety including to serve as Shift Commander. The Lieutenant is responsible for the efficient accomplishment of the daily activities of an assigned shift and to provide protection of life and property, enforcement of college policies and procedures, conducting and overseeing investigations, to participate in community based policing activities and programs, to coordinate assigned activities with other college departments and outside agencies and to provide highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Director (Chief) and Deputy Director (Major) of the department.

Required Qualifications:

An Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.

Twelve (12) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement, security, public safety, corrections or military service experience including four (4) years of administrative and/or supervisory experience.

Must possess a current Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) certification or meet the MPCTC requirements for recertification within 3 years of separation from a law enforcement agency.

Must possess a valid Maryland driver's license and have a good driving record and be capable of operating a public safety vehicle during both day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.

Thorough knowledge of Public Safety, Law Enforcement, and Security procedures.

Excellent customer service skills.

General knowledge of applying administrative rules and regulations to work performed.

Ability to prepare clear concise reports, and to understand and follow written and oral directions.

Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.

Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust and respect.

Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others or give evidence of the completion of a supervisory training course(s).

Ability to relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of the members of the academic community, deal tactfully and effectively with a wide range of people and act calmly and rationally in an emergency.

Ability to mediate minor disputes to evaluate threats to the public safety insuring that such threats are communicated to proper authorities or otherwise handled.

Must be able to identify evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.

Must be able to communicate effectively and coherently over public safety radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.

Must successfully pass a background investigation including verification of qualifying credentials; a review of any criminal record; and verification of at least three references.

Must successfully pass a medical examination to certify general health and an emotional stability and psychological fitness examination.

Maintenance of physical condition needed to effectively perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas.

Must be able to engage in public safety patrol functions that include such things as walking foot patrol and physically checking buildings, climbing flights of stairs, sitting or standing for long periods of time, physically push/pull large heavy objects, lift, pick up and or carry objects or equipment and to perform life saving procedures.

Hours per Week:

40 hours - Evenings and some weekends.
