Magnet Forensics is once again offering promising officers an opportunity to enter the field of, and advance in, digital forensics through the Magnet Forensics Scholarship Program. Applications are open until December 1, 2022.

Who Can Apply and What You Can Receive

The Magnet Forensics Scholarship Program awards recipients in two categories: new to digital forensics and advanced. In the first category, Magnet Forensics is looking for promising investigators who want to get a start in the field of digital forensics. In the second category, the company is looking for more experienced digital investigators who have no experience with Magnet AXIOM and want to learn more about how it can help in their investigations.

Through the program, Magnet Forensics is looking to increase diversity and help agencies address a talent shortage in digital forensics.

“Over the past three years, we’ve seen a historic rise in child exploitation, human trafficking and other cyber-enabled crimes that are placing the digital investigation teams of police agencies under remarkable pressure,” said Jad Saliba, founder and chief technology officer of Magnet Forensics. “The Magnet Forensics Scholarship Awards will provide more agencies with the ability to investigate these crimes and accelerate their pursuit of justice.”

The recipients of the program will receive:

·        Access to a full curriculum of digital forensics training required to become a digital investigator

·         Eligibility to earn leading digital forensics certifications

·         A one-year license of Magnet AXIOM

To apply for the Magnet Scholarship Program, please send your application to [email protected]. Your application should include your current resume, a cover letter explaining your interest and how you meet the program’s objectives and a letter of reference from a supervisor or leader within your agency.

In Honor of Sgt. Steve Martin

The 2022 Magnet Forensics Scholarship Program is honoring an officer who committed his career to the fight against child sexual exploitation. Sgt. Steve Martin joined the Peel Regional Police in 2003, beginning his career on uniform patrol. He would go on to serve with the agency’s neighborhood policing unit and its Criminal Investigation Bureau before joining its Internet Child Exploitation unit in 2013.

He died in January 2021, at the age of 40, after a long bout with cancer, leaving behind his wife and six-year-old daughter.

Learn More About Previous Winners

Westfield Police Dept. civilian criminalist Shandra Hawes was one of four scholarship winners from around the world in the 2020 program. Before her scholarship win, the Westfield Police Dept. was outsourcing all of its digital evidence to a larger agency. The scholarship allowed Shandra to help her agency set up its first digital forensics lab.

“Magnet Forensics is opening the door for me so that I can be trained in how to correctly preserve, process and analyze digital evidence,” she said in an interview with Officer.com. “With Magnet AXIOM and the proper training, I’ll be able to help the Westfield Police Dept take this work in-house for the first time and aid detectives, officers and prosecutors in building stronger cases with digital evidence in a shorter time period.”

After six years of covering crime as a TV news reporter in Indiana, Caroline Torie thought she could do more to impact the pursuit of justice in her community if she joined law enforcement herself. In only her second year as the deputy director of the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit, Caroline was awarded one of four scholarships.

In an interview with Police Magazine, Caroline looked forward to how much she would be able to advance in digital investigations after one year’s worth of training from Magnet Forensics.

“I have learned so much in the last six, seven months and I am excited to learn more through this scholarship,” she said. “This is an amazing opportunity to delve into the nitty gritty of what we do. We are trying to find justice and get to the truth.”

An Investment in Modernization of Policing

Magnet Forensics is investing in the modernization of policing at a time when multiple barriers are still limiting the ability of promising officers to enter digital forensics and help protect innocent lives.

In addition to the Magnet Forensics Scholarship Program, the company is also equipping agencies with new solutions, like those in the Magnet Digital Investigation Suite, to help them tackle the complex challenges posed by crimes with critical digital evidence.
