Nov. 7, 2022
A highly decorated Marine veteran, Shelby Township Police Sgt. Daniel Kammerzell had worked in a variety of roles during his 18-year tenure with the department.

The Shelby Township Police Department has released some additional information on the sudden death of an 18-year department veteran.

Sgt. Daniel Kammerzell, 51, died early Saturday afternoon while on duty, according to the department.

"Sgt. Kammerzell was found unresponsive in his patrol vehicle while on duty," authorities said Sunday in a statement on the department's Crimewatch net website.

Investigators said Sgt. Kammerzell's death does not involve any suspicious or criminal circumstance.

According to the breaking news platform Macomb County Scanner, police officers used their patrol vehicles to hold up traffic along some intersections starting at 23 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue as other officers escorted the ambulance transporting the officer.

Shelby Township police released a statement late Saturday calling Kammerzell a "respected and revered" member of the law enforcement community. In addition to Shelby Township, he previously worked for the Detroit Police Department.

He took various assignments in the department including evidence technician, field training officer, detective, range instructor, training coordinator, founding member and assistant team leader of the Shelby Township Tactical Response Unit. He was a member of Metro Macomb SWAT.

He also served in the United States Marine Corps veteran, where he highly decorated for his honorable work.

"Sgt. Kammerzell always came to work in a great mood; cracking jokes and making everyone laugh," the department said in a statement. "We thank you Sgt. Kammerzell for your dedication to this community. Rest in peace, brother, you will be greatly missed."

His family and the police department request privacy and time to mourn the loss.
