The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University as the Traffic Institute in 1936. The Center is a national nonprofit organization which serves public agencies responsible for law enforcement, criminal justice, public safety, traffic management, and highway transportation systems. Local, county, state and federal government agencies, as well as agencies from foreign countries, are served through programs of specialized training, continuing education, research and development, publications, and direct assistance. Since its founding as the Traffic Institute, the Center has conducted more than 6,500 courses and has taught nearly a quarter of a million students from all fifty states and thirty-eight foreign countries. In fact, the Center for Public Safety has taught more professionals in law enforcement and related fields than the next four largest of such American institutions combined.
