Montana Sheriff's Deputy Seriously Injured in Head-On Crash

Park County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Elliott-Pearson was involved in a head-on crash Friday night.

BILLINGS, Montana -- A Park County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was seriously injured in a head-on crash late Friday night.

Deputy Brian Elliott-Pearson was traveling on Highway 89S when his patrol car was involved in a collision with another vehicle just south of Livingston just before midnight, according to a news release.

Shawn Schmitz, 53 of Columbus, Montana was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elliott-Pearson was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Billings.

The deputy has undergone three successful surgeries so far, with more expected.

"I was able to visit with Brian today and he is in good spirits," Sheriff Brad W. Bichler said in statement. "He and his family wanted to pass along their sincere gratitude for all of the thoughts and prayers sent their way. I will continue to keep you updated as I can. Our community never ceases to amaze me when people are in need. Thank you all again for your support."
