Products for border protection, counter-terrorism, surveillance and more

In "Technology Aids The Domestic Terrorism Fight" (LET April/May 2019, Officer.com/21070657), Daryl Johnson of DT Analytics, a private consulting firm for law enforcement, writes, "Although U.S. law enforcement is unable to prevent every, or attempted, act of extremist violence, there has been an increase in using technology to share information, identify and track potential suspects, and better understand terrorist weapons’ capabilities to further enhance domestic terrorism-related investigations and bring terrorist perpetrators to justice."

Daryl continues by suggesting technologies like automatic license plate readers and connecting the Terrorist Screening Center's "watchlist" with law enforcement - but there are so many more products available: high-tech surveillance systems that recognizes weapons via video, portable radar systems designed for border protection and more.

Here are 7 Homeland Defense & Security Products

As featured in the Law Enforcement Product News October/November 2019 issue.

Automated detection of weapons, disturbances, and suspicious behaviors

This truly unique system automates the detection of weapons, disturbances and suspicious behaviors through existing camera infrastructure. Using computer vision techniques coupled with machine learning for artifact recognition, the solution employs deep learning architecture to alert security teams to anomalies that a standard video system cannot identify.

EhEye is in the process of piloting the solution with an international airport and a correctional facility through the Build in Canada Innovation Program. In addition, the developers also received the support of the National Research Council of Canada. In 2017, they received three (3) awards – two (2) KIRA awards for Most Innovative Startup and Most Innovative Technology and one (1) of StartupFest’s Choice Awards.

“We are very pleased to welcome the EhEye team into the Patriot One family. Their award-winning threat recognition software will integrate into our client’s existing video camera networks offering a first line of defense to detect active shooters or terrorists approaching a venue with weapons drawn,” explained Martin Cronin, CEO and President of Patriot One.

Enable backscatter for new missions, building searches, raids, and counter-surveillance

Viken Detection’s Broadwing-LAD accessory for the HBI-120 handheld x-ray imager is a detachable, lightweight, large-area detector that enhances vehicle inspection capabilities for drug interdiction and enables new applications of the HBI-120, including building searches, tactical raids, and counter-surveillance.

The HBI-120 is currently in use by law enforcement agencies around the world and with Customs and Border Protection at the U.S. border. The HBI-120 is responsible for significant seizures of cash, drugs, and weapons concealed in vehicles. The addition of the Broadwing-LAD accessory provides not only a deeper scan but also a larger view of items being inspected, including vehicles, and even allows authorities to “sweep” rooms to ensure safe entry for officers.

Mobile security light tower

This comprehensive monitoring solution includes a 25-foot telescoping mast, four security cameras with day/night IR capabilities, four LED lamps, one 2TB NVR/router and a 6kW diesel generator for power.

The WCDE-4-4X2MP-PTZ-4X150LTL-LED-2TB-W4G contains four IP security cameras mounted on a telescoping light tower for elevated monitoring. The devices are capable of capturing images in full-HD high resolution (1080p). Auto-adjusting, 4.7-944mm varifocal lens provides up to 20x zoom during use. For nighttime monitoring, long-range infrared LEDs, emitting 850 nm bands, allow the cameras to record targets up to 492 feet away. De-fogging, a polycarbonate lens and an IP66 rated enclosure protects the security cameras from outdoor, destructive elements.

Image processing from the cameras is supported by a 2TB NVR, which is secured and locked at the base of the light tower. This component is equipped with eight channels, video compression, mp4 video offload format, four output ports (VGA, HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0) and nine Ethernet ports. A dual-band professional-grade router, which supports 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz and MIMO, facilitates wireless connection via the Verizon network. A 12-inch external antenna helps extend signal coverage in outdoor work sites.

Handheld counter-drone system

A single SkyWall100 system can protect an area or multiple systems can be deployed from mobile units to protect a large site. SkyWall100 is a handheld system that gives a mobile operator the ability to physically capture a drone in a specifically designed ‘drone entangling’ net. It uses compressed air to launch a projectile up to the drone after the operator has targeted it using the onboard SmartScope. SkyWall100 can be used as a standalone drone defense system but can also be integrated with a wider security system, using the Skylink module, to offer a highly capable counter-drone package. The SkyWall100 system has a number of built-in safety features that ensure it can only be operated when all safety-critical elements are functioning correctly.
