IF I KNEW THEN 2 - Book Review

July 1, 2011
Chief Bill Harvey reviews "If I Knew Then 2: Warrior Reflections" for our readership.

Once again Brian Willis has collected a variety of contributors for this work. It is twenty-nine chapters or vignettes, written by twenty-two top trainers. Each was posed with the assignment to offer their best insights to pass on to today’s young warriors.

Now I am very fortunate to actually call most of these contributors’ colleagues and friends. Although you may not know of them, I assure you that they are pouring out their souls to you.

Most of the contributors are retired or in second careers, they each bring to the reader decades of real law enforcement insights. There is advice from setting your career path to dealing with personal/family issues. Personal financial planning and skills that are needed to survive in the street are there as well. Most of the questions that every young entry- level warrior should ask about career and life but does not are answered. Young officers do not want to ask some of these questions for they do not want to appear weak or afraid to breech them. The veil is lifted here, to me it is as if these writers wanted to give one last bit of advice or the advice they would give a son or daughter entering law enforcement. It is apparent that most of the pieces have urgency to them; it is as if the reader needs this information and now. Trainers are the most giving people I know, here they are giving their best to the reader.

I recommend this book for the trainer and FTO who need to keep their edge sharp in training tomorrow’s warriors. There are sage pieces of advice that will be training nuggets for them. If I had a son or daughter entering police work, this is a book I would demand they read; I would put it in their hands on academy graduation day. The heart felt advice here to the reader is something that does not come in a training film, the classroom but only from one who has lived a honorable career and what to share with the young lions the truths to ensure their success.

Make a commitment to buy this book and give it to young officer that you know. It will give them a guide to becoming the complete and total warrior, one with honor.

I must tell you that a portion of the proceeds from every website sale of Warrior Spirit Books is donated to the ILEETA Fellowship Fund through the Trinity of Dedication Foundation. Go to www.ileeta.org for information on the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association.
