Elzetta Light Mount

The ZFH1500 is a tactical light mount designed to be installed on an AR-15 type rifle.

The ZFH1500 is a tactical light mount designed to be installed on an AR-15 type rifle. Upon examination of the Elzetta ZFH1500, I found it to be constructed of lightweight glass-filled nylon. The sample I evaluated was OD green and also comes in black. This light mount accepts cylindrical flashlights with diameters from .07 to 1.1 inches (18 to 28 mm). The mount is supplied with an adjustable set of spacing clips which can be cut or filed to adjust to various lights.

So, before I installed the light mount, I layed out all of the pieces and found that this would be an easy install. The mount itself is in two halves that are bolted together. There are four hex bolts with nuts provided. Two of bolts go in the top and two in the bottom of the mount. I found that the kit was supplied with an extra hex bolt and nut which would be especially handy if one part was lost. The only tool necessary for the install was one hex wrench that was provided in the kit.

The ZFH1500 mounts to the front sight post and encases the bayonet lug for rifles so equipped. I installed the two halves together, placing them in each side if the barrel. Next, I placed the four bolts in the light mount and tightened them up. This took about five minutes to install. I then installed the flashlight adjustment bolt. This bolt has a convenient thumb wheel to allow for the operator to change out flashlights without any special tools. This mount can be easily removed by reversing the installation procedures and could then be installed on another rifle.

Next I installed a flashlight for a trip to the range. The light I chose to use for this test was a Surefire 6P. All I had to do was slide the flashlight into the mount, check for proper adjustment and tighten down the thumb wheel. This particular light did not require the sizing clips to be installed.

While at the range, I conducted a series of CQB reduced light drills. While manuvering through the course and around barriers, I found no trouble in using the light in the momentary mode. The flashlight was turned on by placing forward pressure on the front sling mount which in turn activated the tailcap switch of the flashlight. It was clear although the best way to go would be to replace the tailcap switch with a remote switch that would then be attached to the handgaurds. By going this route, the operator would be able to utilize various slings and carrying options that would not interfere with the tailcap switch. During the range drills the flashlight stayed securly fastened in the mount and provided and overall sturdy design. I had no trouble activating the flashlight when necessary while moving through the courses of fire. While a bit slower to manipulate, the flashlight could be placed in the constant on mode for situations dictating that tactic to be employed. I also found the mount to be low profile in design which attributes to maintaining precise weapon handling.

In closing, I found the Elzetta ZFH1500 Tactical Flashlight Holder to be a cost effective but rugged solution for mounting a tactical flashlight for use on an AR-15 type rifle.
