'Speed isn't optional'
A modern sports adage goes, "You can't teach speed." But don't tell Jim Klauba that.
In an article in the latest issue of OFFICER Magazine, the retired Chicago police officer talks about the importance of speed training for law enforcement officers, an area of focus that shouldn't be overlooked when coaching tactical skills.
"Training often focuses on strength and technique — both of which are essential — but speed should not be overlooked. As ballistic science shows, when speed increases, so does impact. In the context of defensive tactics, the faster a technique is delivered to its target, the more power it transfers. Speed isn’t optional; it’s a core element of real-world effectiveness."
Klauba discusses different speed training techniques, including those involved with baton tactics and handcuffing.
Plus, we look at effective light and sights training, review the TitanX dry fire device and give tips for the best way to build a law enforcement career.
