Milwaukee Police Officer Killed in Shooting Identified

Milwaukee Police Officer Michael Michalski was fatally shot by a wanted suspect Wednesday.

A Milwaukee police officer died following a shooting Wednesday night.

The incident began when officers were looking for a man wanted on gun and drug violations at a residence at North 28th and West Wright streets in the city's Metcalfe Park neighborhood shortly after 5 p.m., according to WISN-TV.

Police Chief Alfonso Morales told reporters that when the officers encountered the suspect, he opened fire, wounding Officer Michael Michalski.

The 52-year-old 17-year veteran of the force, who was a member of the Special Investigations Division, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A procession of officers escorted the fallen officer's body from Froedtert Hospital to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.

The suspect was taken into custody and the weapon was recovered.

Michalski leaves behind a wife and 3 sons.
