BATTLE CREEK, MI—Police killed a Texas man Thursday in a shooting in Battle Creek after the man was in an altercation with an officer, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a suspicious person around 3:42 p.m., Feb. 15 to Cafe Rica, 62 E. Michigan Ave. in the city, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

A female officer that responded to the scene was in a physical altercation with the man when she received a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. It is unclear if the officer was shot by her own gun, or if the man had a gun and shot her.

The officer was taken to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital and is expected to recover, police said.

The altercation stopped when another officer at the scene shot the man, police said. After receiving medical treatment at the scene, the man died from his injuries, police said.

The incident is under further investigation by Michigan State Police and the Battle Creek Crime Lab. Officers request residents avoid Michigan Avenue between Division Street and Capital Avenue amid the investigation.

The officer who shot the man will be placed on administrative leave, which is “standard procedure,” police said.
