Texas Deputy Shot, Wounded while Struggling with Suspect after Chase

Aug. 13, 2024
A Johnson County sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded while trying to arrest a resisting suspect who fled from Tarrant County when deputies tried to serve felony arrest warrants.

A Johnson County Sheriff's Office deputy shot in the line of duty Sunday night is expected to make a full recovery, Johnson County Sheriff Adam King said Monday.

Thomas William Fisher Jr., 27, of Mansfield, remains in custody in connection with the shooting of JCSO Deputy Austin Reed in addition to other charges.

"Last night, about 9:30 p.m., deputies from the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office began a pursuit, which came into Johnson County down around the Mansfield area," King said. "Their dispatch let us know they were in pursuit heading our way and we patched in with them. We waited at the county line then joined in their pursuit once they crossed into the county."

Tarrant County deputies were attempting to arrest Fisher in connection with Tarrant County felony warrants for obstruction of highway passageway and forgery of a financial instrument.

The chase concluded when the driver and passengers in the chased vehicle exited and ran into a house pursued by deputies from Johnson and Tarrant counties.

"Whenever they went to arrest one of the suspects there was a struggle and Deputy Reed was shot while dealing with the resisting felon," King said.

King on Monday informed members of the Johnson County Commissioners Court that Reed remains hospitalized.

"Fortunately, his injuries were non life threatening," King said. "He took a single round to the hip area but the bullet didn't hit any arteries or anything like that. He's in good spirits, sitting up and talking to everybody. He should be back to work in a few days for light-duty work."

Bond has not been set on Fisher as of press time and he may face additional charges.

"The Texas Rangers took control of the crime scene and will be conducting the investigation," King said.

"We're waiting on the Rangers to finish their investigation before he is charged," King said.

Others in the car with Fisher have not been charged as of yet, King said.

"I think they were interviewed and released," King said. "So I don't know if they will end up being charged with anything just yet. It was a long night."

Johnson County Judge Chris Boedeker asked for the safety of Reed and his fellow deputies during the opening prayer of Monday's court meeting.

"Fortunately, he's doing very well and your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated," King told members of the court.
