Gun thefts recently in the U.S. have happened at between 300,000 to 600,000 per year. That equates to 1,600 stolen guns per day or more than one per minute. One recent study in a major city in the U.S. showed a 40% increase in the number of firearms stolen from vehicles from 2015. It doesn’t take long or require sophisticated tools, in a smash and grab theft, to gain access to the inside of a vehicle and then steal the contents it contains.

Inherently, vehicles are a bad place to keep valuables, especially if those valuables are weapons. But continually, gun owners leave their handguns, shotguns and rifles in their vehicles as they go to the grocery store or to work. It’s as easy as a jimmied door or a broken window, and someone can steal a gun that can later be used to commit another crime and so on.
