PINELLAS PARK, Florida -- A Pinellas Park police officer sprang into action after he observed a dog struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a highway last week and it was all caught on dashboard camera video.

Officer Joe Pugila was on his way to work on Sept. 19 when he saw the dog laying in the middle of I-274 near 38 Avenue North, according to a news release.

Without hesitation, Puglia swerved over to block the dog from traffic, scooped up the dog and rushed it to the Pinellas Animal Hospital.

The team at the Pinellas Animal Hospital was notified of the incident by dispatch and were awaiting the officer's arrival. After treatment and some medical examinations, the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

The owner has not yet been located and the dog has been taken to the Pinellas County Animal Services.

"This incident is just another example of the dedication and compassion our officers have for our four legged friends. Great job to Officer Puglia," the department wrote in a statement.
