Calif. Police Officer Catches Accused Catalytic Converter Thief in the Act

April 1, 2024
A Santa Rosa police officer on patrol spotted a suspect under a pickup truck in a parking lot and allegedly using a power saw to cut off the vehicle's catalytic converter.

A Santa Rosa man was arrested after being caught in the act of stealing a catalytic converter from a stolen truck, police said Saturday.

A police officer on patrol spotted Michael McGarvey, 33, under a white Chevrolet truck in the parking lot of Nagasawa Park, off Fountaingrove Parkway, at about 10:35 a.m. Saturday, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Rick Boehm said in a news release.

McGarvey was using a power saw to cut off the truck's catalytic converter, Boehm said. McGarvey and a male companion — neither of whom were the truck's registered owner — were detained while its owner was contacted. The owner didn't know his truck was gone and knew neither of the men, Boehm said in the release.

McGarvey was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a stolen vehicle and felony tampering with a vehicle. He was booked into Sonoma County jail. The other man who had been detained was questioned and released, Boehm said.

Since 2020, more than 800 Santa Rosa residents have been the victim of catalytic converter theft, Boehm said. It can cost "upward of $3,000 to replace," he said.
