Words matter
Whether you're in command or a patrol officer, you probably hear your share of excuses from colleagues and supervisors. "That's not my job" or "we've always done things that way" can become like wallpaper, ever-present and easy to ignore.
But, as former Chief William L. Harvey notes, taking time to listen to the language can help leaders break down work silos:
"There are several standard responses that invoke disengagement or their state of unwillingness to work. Most of them you know, but they also provide insights on how to gain acceptance."
