Man Found Shot at Chicago Subway Station

Two people were questioned in the attack but weren't considered suspects, police said.

A man was found shot at a South Loop "L" station Monday night, police said.

The 21-year-old suffered a gunshot wound in the upper torso in the attack in the 1100 block of South State Street about 7 p.m., said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, but his condition was later stabilized, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Two people were questioned in the attack but weren't considered suspects, police said.

Authorities said the victim was wounded on the station platform, despite an earlier report that the victim may have been shot on an "L" train.

The victim told police he simply heard the gunshot on the platform and suddenly felt pain before discovering the wound, police said. Police didn't discuss a motive, but said the victim had a gang affiliation and record of arrests.

Green and Orange Line trains were stopped in the area of the Roosevelt Road elevated station for about 20 minutes to facilitate a search on the tracks by police, said CTA spokesman Brian Steele. The Orange and Green Lines bypassed the Roosevelt station for more than an hour and shuttle service ran between the Adams/Wabash station and the 35th Street Station on the Green Line.

One woman who lives in a home nearby said she stepped out her front door, heard two shots, then saw a group of about 20 people, whom she said looked like teenagers, running south on the "L" platform, as if they were going to jump off the platform and onto the tracks. They did not do so, the woman said.

Police activity was centered on the "L" station on Roosevelt Road east of State Street, with several officers stationed outside the street-level station.

The gunman was described as an African-American man, between 18 and 22 years old, standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing between 140 and 150 pounds, and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

No arrests have been made as of this morning.
