Oklahoma Officer Accused of Cattle Theft Shot

The owner of the cattle was taken into custody.

SALLISAW, Okla. --

The Sallisaw police chief said the officer recently accused of stealing 170 cows was shot by the man who owned the cattle Monday in downtown Sallisaw.

Chief Shaloa Edwards said Wendel Hughes was driving in Sallisaw when the man who owned the cows, Mark Sweeney, pulled out a gun and started shooting. Police said three bullets hit Hughes' truck. They said one bullet struck Hughes in the chest.

The chief said Hughes was taken to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital where he was listed in good condition. Hughes will apparently be held overnight for observation.

Sweeney was taken into custody.

Hughes pleaded not guilty last month to 31 counts of larceny.
