Memphis Police Officer Corille Jones, 42, was on duty in the city's Capleville area when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle, killing both Jones and the other driver.

A Tennessee police officer was killed in a violent collision with another vehicle early Thursday that also left another person dead.

The crash happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. as Memphis Police Officer Corille Jones, who was on duty, was driving east in the Capleville area, WHBQ-TV reports. He was struck by another driver, who was heading north.

Jones was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision was so destructive that it sent Jones' cruiser into a gas station pump, and an engine of one of the vehicles ended up on the roadway. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Jones, 32, had been with the department for nearly two years. He is survived by two daughters.

The Memphis Police Association has set up an online fundraising campaign for his family.
