The CDC, on May 1, 2020, adjusted the attributed deaths down based on confirmed test.  See here: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm)

The number of reported cases of COVID-19 in the United States is: 7,321,465 (a 4.5% increase in a week)
The number of deaths resulting from COVID-19 infection in the U.S. is reported as: 209,454 (a 2.6% increase in a week)
The number of recoveries reported in the U.S. is: 4,560,742 (a 7.3% increase in a week)

Website where these statistics are reported from.

The specified website has now added a note indicating that:
The numbers being reported for New York include probable cases and probable deaths (as opposed to confirmed).
The numbers being reported for Maryland include probable deaths.
The numbers being reported for Wyoming include probable cases.

This means that at least three states are reporting “positive test cases” that aren’t all tested but include presumptive infections. At least two states are attributing deaths to COVID-19 without confirmation testing as well. They are presumed to have been caused by the virus.

On August 28, 2020, the CDC reported that only 6% of the reported COVID-19 deaths were caused EXCLUSIVELY by the Novel Coronavirus while the remaining 94% of the COVID-19 victims had an average of 2.5 comorbidities (pre-existing health conditions).

According to this webpage published by Johns Hopkins University the worldwide numbers are:
Confirmed cases:    33,119,791
Total Recovered:      22,930,309
Total Deaths:             997,966

This same site reflects both Total Recovered and Total Deaths in a single window (tab at the bottom of it changes which you see). The number of Total Test Results (keep in mind that some people are tested multiple times) is shown as  101,298,794 (09/28/20 0600 eastern time). With 7,321,465 reported cases (shown above), that means that 7.2% of the tests given are positive – and that 92%+ are negative (NOTE: That percentage of negative may be low since reported positive cases also include people diagnosed positive without testing). The United States is averaging approximately 5,000,000 tests per week as of 9/28/2020.

It is important to remember that the “Total Recovered” might be reported low due to the people who have been confirmed, sent home to “self-care / treat” and then never return for repeated testing to confirm recovery.

This website (https://covidtracking.com/data/) provides numbers of tests given, numbers positive, numbers negative and numbers pending. It has totals for the U.S. 50 states plus territories and breaks them all down individually as well, so you can see your own state's numbers. Currently reported numbers show negative tests outstripping positive tests nine to one.
