Ironwood Public Safety Officers Colin Clausen and Kevin Stevens received the agency's Life-Saving Award of Commendation after they entered a burning flower shop and saved a woman inside.

IRONWOOD, MI – Two Upper Peninsula police officers are being recognized for saving a woman from a burning flower shop.

The Ironwood Department of Public Safety announced Thursday that officers Colin Clausen and Kevin Stevens were awarded the Life-Saving Award of Commendation by Director Andrew DiGiorgio on May 13.

The honor stems from a fire that occurred at Lutey’s Flower Shop & Greenhouse on South Mansfield Street at 11:23 p.m. on March 19. Both officers responded and saw the business in flames and heavy smoke amid a strong north wind.

The officers entered the building and heard a female respond. Despite the presence of heavy smoke, they located the woman in an upstairs bedroom and helped her escape.

The woman received immediate medical attention from Beacon Ambulance and was treated for smoke inhalation but survived.
