The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ATLANTA --

Atlanta has made concessions in hiring new police officers in trying to reach a goal of 2,000 officers.

A review of job applications at the Atlanta Police Academy found that more than one-third of recent graduates -- 12 out of 33 officers hired -- have been arrested or cited for a crime.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution conducted the review and found that the arrests ranged from minor offenses such as shoplifting to violent charges including assault.

More than one-third of the officers had been rejected by other law enforcement agencies, and more than half of the recruits admitted marijuana use.

Police Lt. Elder Dancy runs the department's recruitment unit.

He said in an ideal world they would like to see every applicant with a clean record, but, he said, "obviously that's not reality."

Police Recruits
If you think the above article is bad. . . you should look at what Birmingham Al. hires and calls police officers. These guys are getting arrested for assault and B & E on a regular basis after being officers for two and three years. B'ham has some very good officers but they are definately hiring a bunch of thugs too.

This version of the article doesn't include his qoute stating that no department will only hire recruits with a clean record. News to me. I just finished working on our hiring and you better be clean to get through.

I think this Lt is fooled if he thinks that everyone does it this way.

You can thank affirmative action for most of that.

Police Recruitment
Its not just there its everywhere. Its a whole new generation of officers out there and that does not speak for all of them but its really a sad day when you have to arrest one of your own

Very sad. Affirmative action in action. Breaks my heart when you cant tell your child to find a police officer if he needs help and feel good about it.

If anyone believes this is not due to affirmative action and the push for more minorites to show more diversity in the neighborhoods that are patrolled they need to have they're head examined.
Shame on Atlanta for hiring thugs. It tarnishes the badge for the rest of us that never had a criminal record or traffic citations when we went for background checks.

Recruitment of Officers
Recruitment for Police Officers anywhere today is a challenge to say the least. When it was a respected job ( years past ) you had waiting list of applicants. Today, it is ruined by affirminative action. Promotions and speciality jobs within the department are " given" rather than earned thus creating morale and experienced officers to leave the department. The outcome is "rookies" for a department. Just look at Columbus Police Department in Columbus Georgia. This is an excellent example of a once top of line department that "quickly went to the bottom" under the direction of less qualified, less experience persons who were " Quickly " promoted to meet mandates . It's a shame..Columbus had some of the best in the Nation...now you couldn't get Sanitation Department to hire some of these "elite " officers

That is just piss poor. There are some things that can be overlooked with the passage of time, but you'd better have a good story to justify hiring someone who'd been arrested for assault or B&E. That wouldn't stand a chance in the three agencies I've worked for.

What Is this ATLANTA????
This really is sickening, the comment about telling your child to find a police officer and not feeling good about it is hard to swallow. It is such a true comment and is scary to think about. Hopefully Atlanta can take care of there problems out there including the Lt.

What exactly does this have to do with affirmative action? B Town Boomer and Mr. Brad assume all the officers in question are black. Statistically, that may be so, but Im sure there are a number of white and hispanics this applies to as well. Goes to show there is no racism, only dark blue and light blue.
