This is such a terrible tragedy. It is so sad to know that a young teenage couple lost their lives in this incident. I pray for the families who lost their loved ones in this collision.

Unfortunately for the officer and the department it looks like they are going to have some major obstacles in the near future. The officer will most likely lose his job and may even do time in prison. The fact is that no matter what type of call the officer was responding to that he still has to drive with due regard for the public. Ninety four miles per hour on surface streets without lights and sirens does not show due regard at all. Even if the officer had been using lights and sirens he still would not be alleviated from driving with due regard.

This is a problem we have seen with our department in recent months and fortunately we have had no serious collision. It is becoming a huge training issue because it is such a huge liability.

2 words...No excuse. 94 M.P.H. in a business district? Coming FROM a call? We don't do 94 going TO a call. Second guessing won't do any good here, two young lives and a career were needlessly lost and could have been a third. Tragedy all the way around but no matter how you look at it, two words.

Va Law,
Your exactly right, I couldn't agree more. I usually give may brothers and sisters in blue the benifit of the doubt, but this is bad.

My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Officer needs to be charged with vehicular homicide. The officer was not responding to a call and had no excuse for travelling as fast as he was. the officer with the dash-cam was also going too fast. I smell jail time.

Racing?
Looks like they were racing. They were'nt on a call, but returning from one. Young officers need to realize their not invincilble.

I guess not much weight will be placed on the other car failing to yield while turning left?

My regards go out to the families and friends of the deseased.

I see it daily, fellow officers responding to calls that have little to no priority at mach 5 and what it comes down to is lack of experience. To make this case even worse the officer was not even on a call, there isnt enough articultion in the world that would justify why he was, or needed to be driving that fast.

What officers like this dont realize is there actions effect us all by either creating more case law, changes in policy, or limitations on what we can and cant do. I think what we do is hard enough with the laws, and policies and such in place now let alone added restrictions or prohibs.

Well...
"I guess not much weight will be placed on the other car failing to yield while turning left?"

Sure, it certainly is a factor, but geez....94 mph? There's a bunch-o-weight.

Basic stuff...just because you have lights and sirens doesn't mean traffic knows you're there...so why the hell would you expect them to know without running code?

Some other heads should roll within that unit, even if it goes to the top. No department should allow it's officers to think, for even just a moment, that they could pull a stunt like that and get away with it.

"I hit speeds of 130 mph at time but only on highways of course."
YOU need a "smart car"
