KENDALL, Fla. --

Someone broke into two unmarked police vehicles early Monday and set them on fire, police said.

The cars were parked outside the Kendall home of two undercover police officers on Sunday night. At some point overnight, someone broke into the two unmarked police vehicles and stole weapons, bulletproof vests and police equipment, including radios, identification and badges. Then, they set the vehicles on fire.

Miami-Dade police are investigating and trying to determine who broke into the SUV and minivan.

Investigators said they do not know how the thieves knew the vehicles contained police equipment. Police sources believe the officers were targeted. Law enforcement sources said stolen equipment is often used in subsequent crimes, Local 10's Mark Joyella reported.

Authorities are concerned because the officers are undercover and drive unmarked vehicles and their identities might be in danger of exposure.

The officers, a husband and wife, work for two different agencies: one for the Miami-Dade Police Department and the other for Doral.

"It's a scary situation," said neighbor Evelyn Olive. "The fact that it had been so close and they have kids, that's very, very scary."

Investigators are examining the vehicles for fingerprints or other evidence. Police are keeping an eye on the neighborhood, and the search continues for the criminals.

The officers and their children were unharmed in the incident.

"It's a reminder police officers can be victims of crimes, just like anyone else," said one police official close to the case.

My thoughts also. Who leaves that stuff in their car? Also what kind of car were they using? Were they Crown Vics?

Smart husband & wife crime fighters
I have noticed that in working with other peace officers they often leave police items in their cars, maybe they think because they are the police, ain't nobody going to fool with "my" stuff.....one other comment, don't lay anything around in the station house you don't want to come up missing.

The authorities should be concerned because someone will probably end up dead with one of these idiot's firearms.
Their identities are the last thing the authorities should be worried about. Their identities are already known, that's how they got their *censored* stolen.

Don't leave weapons,ID,portable radio, uniform or anything else LE related in the car overnight. If I could get the vehicle radio out, I'd take it in the house too. It's a small hassle but there's no way I want a bad guy armed or equipped because of my laziness.

Or even if you could, put your take home car in the garage. I know it is sacrificing your personal vehicle, but it is better than the alternative. But I could see this happening to me as well. Makes you wonder what the world is coming to.

Always have accountability for your equipment and gear. That's one thing I've learned from my younger years as a Marine and til this day.

To the jackass armchair quarterback morons
Are you friggin' people for real? Laziness? Stupid? Would you take the same stand when a citizen's car was broken into? Bull - you wouldn't. Let's make clear who the victims are here.

If you have to take everything out after each shift then you might as well just have fleet cars as there is no point in a take-home. I'll be damned if I'm going to pull three long-guns, two duty bags, and all my other crap out every 10 hours because my car might get broken into and torched. That's ridiculous.

To: William Shatner....

Yeah, you should take your weapons out of your car to say the least. Not a very difficult thing to do every 10 hours or how ever long your shift is... I've worked doubles with quick returns (only 8hrs off) many times and still remove weapons from my car and put them in the gun safe where they BELONG.... How would you feel is someone broke into your police vehicle, stole your guns, killed your family with them while you watched and then let you live. Makes you think about being a smart cop now, doesn't it???
