HOUSTON --

Two Liberty County sheriff's deputies were shot in a neighborhood near Dayton and their suspected shooter is dead, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Deputies were called out to a disturbance in the Woodland Hills neighborhood along County Road 6473 near County Road 6479 at about 6 a.m.

Investigators said the deputies were met with gunfire when they arrived.

Deputy Rex Evans, 40, and Deputy Jeremy Marcantel, 33, were wounded. They were both wearing bulletproof vests.

Paramedics said the deputies' injuries were not life-threatening. They were both taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. They suffered head and upper body injuries, officials said.

Evans, who has been with the sheriff's office for about six months, was treated and released, officials said. Marcantel remained hospitalized in stable condition.

There was a standoff with the suspected shooter and he was later found dead outside a home. Investigators said they don't know it the man killed himself or if he died from law enforcement gunfire.

Officials said have not released the suspected shooter's name or the motive.
