Disgusting. These people are morally bankrupt. This is going to get an innocent person at home at night with their families killed.

somewhat unrelated to this, I don't understand why when people see lights and hear sirens and hear a helicopter overhead they think, I better go outside and see whats going on and take a weapon with me. It just adds to the confusion.

Warhawk, did you even read the story? He wasn't planning on going outside with the knife. He was ordered outside by the police and forgot he had it.
I would've picked up my weapon too, if I was in his shoes.

Im with Joe Cop
Honestly warhawk did you even read this, the story stated that he grabbed a knife and locked the door. I never read that he ran outside with a knife to see what was going on but then again I could be wrong????

Swatting Calls
To all officers, detectives, responding specialty units:
Let's remember that 911 reports give us license to investigate our own probable cause and should not be taken completely at face value. Sound judgment and efficient use of resources ON OUR PARTS initially will determine more realistically how we should proceed.
Also we should never forget - we are servants - protecting and respecting people. Even when we detain, we should not be brutal on suspects, because WE may one day be fraudulently suspect. Be safe, smart, and have integrity on and off duty. Thank you for your service.

SWATTING?
Our team never responded without first having a real flesh and blood police officer on the scene confirming the need for SWAT. What kind of system sends this much man power forth without confirmation? Without even a phone call to the house? And for those who think, well the phone was tied up, how about having the trained operator tell the person on the phone to go outside and meet the waiting officer? There is so much wrong with the agencies involved here!!!

SWAT and Swatting Issues
Deputy in WA and Retired Responder in Louisiana are both correct in what they said. Although tentions run high and officers do tend to get carried away in situations when giving orders, you have to be careful to protect yourself and make sure the person your dealing with is a suspect or criminal in an act and isn't a poor victim themselves. We all know we don't want to be hurt or hurt innocent citizens.

As for what Retired Responder said, I was thinking the same thing. I have never heard of a SWAT Team going on a call without officers already on the scene and being able to give them enough information to know what they are up against or dealing with.

Although as LEO's we want to move as quickly as we can to stop a bad situation or control it, we need to make sure we don't over react or jump to conclusions without checking an incident out first.

It's another case of unfortunate circumstances were idiots and fools found a way to do something that creates danger for both LEO's and the public.

Stay safe and my God see you home at the end of your shift.

SWAT and Swatting Issue
I guess I dont understand how this call went out from a computer to an agency so far away. Can someone give a simpler way of this happening? Anyways, I could see where there might be a swat response to this as there could be patrol/swat officers on duty at this time that serve dual capacity and were also the first responder. I hope that the victims of these file huge lawsuits against the people that made these calls, along with the agency responding not only filing criminal, but also file suit to recover expenses involved.

This is so irreversibly dangerous. Five years jail time?
(While budget cuts are eliminating LE working hi-tech completely).
The suspect needs to pay back the cost; court -ordered also pay at least 100K that would get at least 18 call centers. Gary Allen's solution for now-- makes sense.

Correction: 2-1/2 years to five year sentences
An innocent person did not end up irreversible dead. There have been roughly 200 of these calls. Pranksters and their families needed to start paying Big Bucks with their short sentences. Where is the deterrance?
