The mayor of Wellford, S.C. is defending a policy she issued earlier this month which bans police officers from chasing suspects on foot, according to WSPA-TV.

On Sept. 2, Mayor Sallie Peake issued a memo to all of the city's officers that read: "As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever."

Peake told the news station that she issued the mandate because several officers have been injured during chases, driving up insurance costs for the town.

The city is paying $20,000 annually in workers' compensation claims, much of which goes to the police force, she said.

According to Wellford Police Chief Chris Guy, three officers have been injured during foot chases in the last two years

Guy has told his officers to abide by the policy and says they can still protect the public.

"Just because a suspect may run does not mean we can't identify them, sign warrants, and catch them later," he said.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright disagrees with Guy's assessment, telling WSPA-TV that when a suspect gets away, there is always the chance he could hurt someone before officers catch up with him.

"If a bank robber or a drunk driver or a shoplifter or somebody with a warrant runs on foot, it's our obligation to do what we can do to bring them to justice," he said.

Everyone is hurting financially however, $$ signs should never come before public safety. This decision goes against the oath every officer takes to serve and protect. I say chase away, what is she going to do, suspend you for doing your job?

Wow...... maybe one of these street urchins will run into her house without being chased by an officer... Im sure she will see the importance of getting them off the streets then

Wow, can you say lawsuit waiting to happen? If she thinks workers comp. is expensive wait till the city gets sued because officers are not allowed to do their job due to an ignorant mayor who cannot even justify her own order when asked about it..... nice

Wow
$20,000 in workers comp is chump change after your towns first civil suit where a suspect ran, was not pursued and committed further crimes and or kills someone.

New residents
I have a bunch of residents up here that I am sure would love to live down there. They all have the same career, Criminal. One of the more annoying things they have to put up with in their chosen line of work is when the Police chase them. No chasing make the criminals life so much nicer. Thank you Mayor Peake for making Wellford such a comfortable place for criminals, I am sure they will appreciate it. For me I will stay in a place where the Police are permitted to do their jobs and catch bad guys, kind of like it is supposed to be.

This is an invitation for anyone wishing to commit a larceny, or burglary to have a field day in this town... I can't wait to see how long this lasts for.

HMM, no foot pursuits. how fast can one run on foot? I dont know the answere, but I can tell you vehicle pursuits are a bit more dicey. they should also take there bullets and handcuffs. Oh and dont forget those useless radios to call for back on. I would seriously look into a higher ruling of sorts, to see if there is anything that would give you guys some teeth and dig into it with a state or DOJ ruling. Or just wait till the Mayors Daughter is attacked or a burglary robes her home and is runniung away with her things. Good luck guys and gals.

I don't understand the reasoning that you can get a warrant and get them later. Why wouldn't they run when you come after them with the warrant?

This policy is a slap in the face to every citizen of Wellford. For their sake I pray that this does not end in tragedy, but common sense pretty much dictates that it will. To the Officers of the Wellford PD, stay strong brothers, and God bless.
