CINCINNATI --

Budget cuts in Hamilton County will lead to the release of 472 prisoners and the layoff of 201 employees in the Sheriff's department, according to Sheriff Simon Leis.

Speaking Tuesday afternoon on WLW radio with Bill Cunningham, Leis said the prisoners at Queensgate jail will be released on the first of the year because there will be no budget to keep the jail open.

Leis said his budget is being cut by $12 million and there will be an impact to public safety.

In addition to the jail closing, Leis said he'll need to layoff 115 corrections officers, 38 administrators and 48 sheriff's deputies.

Among the deputies, 17 will come from Anderson Township, 15 from Colerain Township and 15 more from Green Township.

If the sheriff is forced to make cuts in his department, Leis will ride out his final term in hard times. "I've never had so much difficulty as I have right now," he said.

The cuts are deep, but not everyone thinks the sheriff's department should take the hit.

Chris Finney is a board member for the anti-tax group called COAST, or Citizens Opposed to Additional Taxes. He says the cuts are long overdue and that public safety wouldn't have to suffer if the county prioritized and made cuts elsewhere.

"Court reporters, promoting new conventions, vehicle maintenance, 9 employees of the county commissioner's office; not a single one of them is being cut in this budget," said Finney.

This is outrageous, putting public safety at risk over revenue. There are other measures that could and should be taken. I dont like raising taxes but laying off law enforcement officers is not the answer.

WHEN IT COMES TO REDUCING COUNTY BUDGETS IT SEEMS LIKE THE SHERIFF'S ALWAYS TAKE THE HIT. BEEN THERE, FELT IT!

This is absurd. Cutting the sheriff's dept. should be one of the last things to go. Your city will face more crime in the long run. Just you wait and see. Bad decision!

This appears to be an attention getting release. I do not believe the constituents or the elected officials of that county would allow the safety of the community to be jeopardized. I would hope not. TImes are tough, but releasing inmates and laying off deputies is not the answer.

Lay Offs
It's not new, in 1982, my county in Michigan laid off 23 deputies, we were out the door for 14 months over a squabble between the county board and the Sheriff.
While the townships supported the Sheriff, there weren't any funds forthcoming...

BUDGET CUTS
Seems sad that the county can not make cuts else where. I feel sorry for the family who has to suffer when a family member is lost due to murder, rape or armed robbery, just because there was a lack of law enforcement coverage.

It's Always Us
Why is it that the first place that gets cut are the Law Enforcement jobs. I knew a city in Illinois that had to lay off a couple of officers, but fortunately they had a good back door policy with the county and those officers just had to change uniforms. I've been in the security field for a number of years now and I can tell you that budget cuts hit us even harder. You can't see the services provided for our employers. Production can be doubled in a year and you have a dollar value associated with it. With LEO's and Security jobs, the powers that be just don't see the dollar figure. How do you calculate how many times you stopped an incident just for being there...You Can't. Don't let the communities suffer because you don't want to cut a politicians budget. And another thing...just where do you think Cincinatti's arrests are going to go?

it's politics! Nobody cares if you cut convention promotions, bailiff's etc. My guess is the county wants to raise taxes and this is the only way to do it. It we don't get the tax increase.......GLOOM AND DOOM! you must give us the tax increase!! The voters get what they vote for.

Give me money or else
The Sheriff has been sticking money into different piles for years... and he claims his "jail" fund is out of cash. The county didn't vote to give him more money to build a new jail during the last vote... so he is extorting the cash from the county by threatening to release inmates and layoff deputies. HANDS UP... THIS IS A STICK UP!!
