vest on duty
It's policy at my PD to wear our vest on duty. I wear mine simply because I'm allergic to bullets. It gets hot in Texas but not that hot for me. I know officers that leave theirs draped over the passenger seat while they work. At least the seat will be safer.

Our patrol guys don't have a choice - wear 'em or go home and put it on. Includes our investigators. Myself and command staff, whether in uniform or not, wear them every day. We're looking at incorporating wearing a shell during the summer months so at least you can take it off easily in the office and cool off.

It's saved me at least once - knife to the belly. I've worn a vest since 79 - Second Chance, don't leave home without it!

I don't think dead or grievously wounded is very comfortable. Wear the damn vest!! Can't afford a vest? Check into grants that are offered through the federal government (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bvpbasi/). Go to the local business community or chamber of commerce and see what they can offer for assistance in purchasing body armor. Hold a raffle if needed to purchase body armor. Police officers, contrary to popular belief, are not bulletproof.

Nights on patrol hating how uncomfortable a vest is-All of them.
4 nights per week times 52 weeks per year times 30 years wearing vest-6240 times.
Looking at your baby girl the day after a vest saves your life- Priceless.
Cost of NOT wearing a vest- Too high.
Don't give them an advantage guys..wear it.

It is 120+ in the summer where I work and the humidity hits 80-90% during some months, but I have never and will never work without my vest on. Heat and comfort are just excuses.
