OMAHA, Neb. --

The Carter Lake police chief accidentally shot one of his officers inside the Carter Lake Police Department Wednesday.

Chief of Police Shawn Kannedy was discussing firearms with two other officers, according to Carter Lake City Attorney Joe Thornton. Kannedy accidentally discharged a firearm, striking Sgt Dan Driver.

Driver was taken to Creighton Medical Center in a police cruiser. He was in good condition Wednesday night and expected to make a full recovery.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.

Kannedy has been placed on administrative leave.

At our place, you don't get promoted to Deputy Chief or Chief unless you've had a negligent discharge. It's not surprising that they are promoted to the level of incompetence, it's just surprising how fast they get there...

Most accidental discharges never get reported.

Unless there is an injury.

Ever wonder why every covered police range has at least one hole in the roof?

The best thing for the Cheif to do is "hang up the gun belt" he has no buinsess carrying a gun.

Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Never point a firearm at something you are not willing to destroy.

Accident/negligent discharge
Sounds to me like the Chief needs to go to remedial training. Oh wait. In California Chiefs and admin. staffing aren't required to go to training. We have some agencies that have had thier Chiefs not qualify for over three years, (not enough time to get to the range). That Chief doesn't need to hang up his gunbelt. He needs to continually train with those he leads.

KETV, who reported the story, is an Omaha station...where this reported story is originating. Pott. county shares a border with Omaha. The story didn't read Carter Lake, NE. Take it easy.
