Three NYPD officers and a civilian were injured by ricocheting bullets after cops opened fire on a pit bull in an Upper East Side housing project last night, police said.

The wild scene unfolded when six officers from the 19th Precinct and Manhattan North task force responded to a call of an assault with a gun in progress at the Stanley Isaacs Houses at 10:30 p.m.

When they knocked on the door of an 11th-floor apartment at 1806 First Ave. at East 93rd Street, a woman who answered sicced the pit bull on the officers, according to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.

The cops opened fire, killing the dog, but three of the officers were hit by fragments of their own bullets or concrete chips.

The woman was struck in her right hand.

All were taken to New York Hospital with minor injuries, Browne said.

The most seriously injured officer was hit below the right eye.

Five people were taken out of the apartment and were being questioned by cops, but no weapons were immediately recovered.

"That apartment has always been trouble. There's something always going on over there," said building resident Frank Lopez.

Another resident, 13-year-old Isiah Marrero, said he recognized one of the injured officers.

"He's real nice. He always works on the block and he always has something nice to say," he said.

Historically, the New York Post has been the most pro-cop newspaper in New York City. Although they've had their moments...

thats a mess
I am a big dog lover. I love them with everything I got I own 2 of them they are loveable but can be mean if pushed to it.. You know I dont get the people who thinks its cool just to have a dog to make them mean... People like these are crazy for turning dogs like that.. But as long as I have been around Dogs its how the owner trains it. That could of been a poodle that done all of that you never know now and days. Thats sad but For all the officers who did there job, you gotta do what makes everyones life safe and obvisly the owner didnt care for safety or anything so you had to do it... I do love that there is a 13 year old boy saying there was good cops thats rare to hear now and days. trust me Look up andeson we wouldnt have that here...

Katheryne, I am sorry. But, I am not sure I understood your last sentence. Are you saying most kids/teenagers in Anderson are ""confused""re: law enforcement?
Hopefully, an officer at a time can change that problem to the positive--including with administration's support.
Anderson should have the right-fitting cops and admin so the problem is addressed, eliminated.
Hope you get to hear it soon, too
