The gun and badge of a Police Academy cadet moonlighting as a pizza deliveryman were stolen in an armed robbery on Long Island - and he was put on desk duty for violating rules regarding second jobs, sources said yesterday.

Shamsher Dhillon, 25, of Richmond Hill, Queens, was delivering pizzas for Domino's in Huntington Station Saturday night when two men - one brandishing a rifle - approached and demanded money, the sources said.

Dhillon pulled out his gun and fired a shot, but was struck on the head, and the two men stole his gun, badge, wallet and cellphone.

Dhillon was placed on modified duty because cadets are not allowed to have second jobs. Sources said Dhillon, who is slated to graduate next week, had only recently taken the job because his mother needed financial help.

well, at least he wasn't robbing banks, drug running, car chopping, prostitution rings, or using stolen credit cars like some of the new york cities finest. give the kid a break at least he was trying to make an honest living.

Why does a police "Cadet" Have a Gun/Badge? Shouldn't the gun and badge be part of what he earns at graduation?

I know I didn't get to leave work with my issued firearm until about 3 hours before I graduated the academy and that was only so I could go home and get into my class A's and get to graduation on time. I wore my uniform (without a badge) to graduation with strict orders not to get involved in any type of enforcement as I was not yet a sworn officer...

just about every dept is like yours street cop, however, even if he had 10 years on, or just graduated the academy, he was confronted by to men with rifles. you would of gave your sh## up too. he is lucky to be alive once they found out he was a cop. we had a cop die after being robbed at a gas station and when they found out he was a cop they followed him to his home and killed him on his front lawn.

Well maybe if NYPD paid their people alittle better they wouldn't have to work part time jobs to make ends meet.

Street cop,

Some agencies in the NE Coast send cadets to the acdemy for a few months (4 mos) then out on patrol with an FTO for a few months (3mos) then after completion of the FTO is graduation. Its weird I know but thats the way it is n some places.

Why is this even making nationwide news? Dude violated procedures and will be driving pizza full time. What policies will he violate when he is on a year?

Looks like his career will be short lived... It is my opinion that cadets should not have second jobs, but if NY is not paying well enough what choice is there?

I once thought about going to the NYPD but they just don't pay enough to live on. Especially with a family.

I have friends with NYPD and I know they don't pay worth $*#@. Especially under their current billionaire Mayor. Sad cops have to work a 2nd job just to make ends meet. But it is what it is. We didn't take this job for the money. Hope this cadet gets to keep his job but when you're on probation its hasta la vista, baby!

NYPD Cadet
In NYC, they are "cadets" until gradudation - he had his 'tin" and gun as they OJT in a grey uniform - and get a free ride on the LIRR and buses. He is an idiot for breaking rules AND having the tin and iron on him as he is not yet sworn. He will NOT get the chance to walk a beat on Coney Island. Trust me. At least the perps didn't kill him, thank God.

If New York would come around and start to pay their new officers a competitive salary then maybe the they wouldn't have to work second jobs.
