LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. --

A Lathrup Village police officer was killed Thursday by a roadside bomb while serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, said the Lathrup Village police chief.

Officer Matthew Hilton, 37, was a member of the National Guard and a Lathrup Village police officer of seven years. He was also a Detroit police officer for a few years before coming to Lathrup Village in 2007, said Police Chief Bob Jones.

Hilton's family said his wife is also in the military, but not on active duty.
