BURTONSVILLE, Md. - Police officers from three jurisdictions opened fire on a bank robbery suspect during a running gun battle Thursday, fatally wounding the man, Montgomery County police said. Two bank robbery suspects were still being sought.

The shooting happened in Burtonsville, where three bank robbery suspects bailed out after a chase that stretched across Howard, Anne Arundel, Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

Officers from Montgomery, Howard and Prince George's counties opened fire on the suspect, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said. Which officer fired the fatal shot will have to be deterimed through ballastics testing following an autopsy.

Hovering overhead, NewsChopper 7 captured pictures of first responders performing CPR on the suspect and loading him into an ambulance. Investigators confirmed just before noon he had died.

Police have set up a perimeter in Burtonsville and are searching for two other bank robbery suspects.

Heavily armed officers stopped every vehicle along Greencastle Road in Burtonsville, opening doors and searching the vehicles -- sometimes with weapons drawn -- as they looked for the two remaining suspects.

Officers from at least eight jurisdictions were involved in the search.

Canine officers, escorted by tactical officers armed with assault rifles, searched apartment complexes and wooded areas, looking for the suspects.

The chase began after a bank robbery in Clarksville, Howard County, Md. Three gunmen robbed the Bank of America branch located in the 6300 block of Ten Oaks Road about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, an eyewitness told ABC 7/NewsChannel 8.

In the course of the robbery, police say that a bank employee was wounded in the hand. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

A witness to the robbery followed the suspects' vehicle -- a black pickup truck -- and called 911, Howard County police said. Officers located the vehicle and gave chase, passing through "multiple jurisdictions", whose officers also joined the pursuit.

The cordon caused six Montgomery Schools in the area to be placed on Code Blue, meaning students were kept inside.

Students' dismissals were also impacted.

Give that citizen a reward for following the bad guys! Refreshing to see someone help out and go all out instead of "I didn't see nothing, sir." Good stuff!

Melanie,
Did you read the article or just ignore the fact that the robbers shot one of the bank tellers while he was just stealing money. The officers were also being shot at by the robbery suspects so I guess they did have some business to attend to. Great job and I am glad the teller will recover and none of the officers were injured.

MD Robbery leads to police chase
Too bad the suspect died. Definately not worth the money. Excellent job on the part of the officers from neighboring counties. Stay safe out there.

Melanie, The officers obviously did pay attention to the innocent public all around, as none of them were hurt during the chase. Chases can be dangerous, but when armed suspects shoot innocent bank tellers I would expect officers to pursue. When the suspect shoots at the officers, I would expect them to shoot back and more accurately. That is what happened today.

Jon, You should marry Melanie, you two are equally ignorant. Do a little research on search and seizure regarding vehicles, and the authority officers have when a life-threatening situation is occuring. You might be surprised by what you learn, and by what the officer does when you tell him/her to do something unpleasant. Education can do wonders for you, Jon and Melanie.

Stay safe out there, good job to the officers in this case.

Careful on roads!!
Perhaps Melanie, (Who obviously knows nothing of the reality Police work will find she needs the Police one day and maybe the Police will take their time so they dont annoy any one while they respond to her call.

Bank Robbery
Oh god no Melanie, we wouldn't want to annoy anyone while chasing the GUN TOTING bank robbers...you are completely CLUELESS. I'm surprised a person with your lack of common sense can even manage to breathe. YOU are what is wrong with America.

To the cops, nice job brothers....one less a-hole to worry about...nice shot.
