No one will know this idiots primary objective, but I would hope to think Fake gun or not that every other officer in this situation would make the same decision. Bottom line is we all have families and want to be the ones to be able to go home to them at the end of the night. I have family in the NYPD and hope that they are just as safe as I am when on or off duty.

I without hesitation would have shot anyone pointing that gun at me. I just feel terrible for the officer who shot the suspect. Officers already go through enough grief when we have to take a life and then to have the added pressure of knowing that the gun wasn't real in the first place. Mentally, I could just see that being a greater strain on an officer, even though it was a totally righteous shoot.

Sounds like we have yet another Darwin award winner... Kudos to the officer for doing what needed to be done. Despite any arguements a street lawyer might have, there will never be enough time to determine whether the gun is real or fake when someone is pointing it at you.

Don't bring a toy gun to a gunfight.

Man Pointing Fake Gun Killed by NYPD
I am a retired federal law enforcement officer with thirty five years service at county, state and federal levels. I contently happen to be a collector of fire arms. Facing the same situation I would have identified that fake gun as a, 22 caliber long rifle Whitney Semi-automatic pistol made by the Whitney Firearms Company in Hartford, Connecticut just like the one in my collection.

I would have not hesitated to use deadly force and my attorney would have the weapon if a case ever came to trial to show that I acted in a proper manner. The officer was fully justified in using deadly force.
