In this field it is often prudent advice to always think with the mentality the female is going to sue or complain. Keep small talk to a minimum, never ask anything personal, and include them in whatever work the "boys" are doing. This seems to keep the complaining to a minimum and gives them no basis if they do complain.

Ok, I'm a female in law enforcement. I have to say, that I think most of this stuff just comes with the territory.... If you can't handle offensive or sexual comments, then you probably shouldn't be there... sorry girls. You have to have tough skin in this career. I, for one, don't mind the sexual harassment! HA! No, there are plenty of ways to get back at them and you have to have your boundaries, and stick to them. If you show from the beginning what you will and will not put up with, then you shouldn't have a problem. Most of the time, it really is all in good fun.
That being said..... being excluded from training exercises and denied a promotion (if she deserved one) now that's something to be upset about. That by itself would probably have been enough for her to sue. The rest of the typical male stuff.... lighten up, and then get your own digs in.

Let's see came on in 1999 and was a handler for 6 years in canine. I question that!

I must also say that every time a female does this, it makes my job ten times harder. You guys shouldn't have to feel like you can't be yourselves around us. When I switched departments I had to go out of my way just to reassure "males" that I wouldn't be offended by anything. In actuality, they're more likely to get offended than me. Or feel more sexually harassed than me, cause I can make some pretty good harassing statements myself. :-)

I'm also a female officer and have been with my dept. for 20 years. I understand joking and that type of thing, but all of us need to be careful. I'm a good looking woman, the guys love me, so any joking is all in good fun. The same might not be said for some of the other women, who maybe aren't so easy on the eyes, or who have short hair and don't wear make up.. you know what I'm saying. I've seen those situations, where the joking wasn't meant in fun.. I've see some cruel pranks at the expense of others, both men AND women. I'm just sayin... and we women can be sued also, being a female isn't a green light to say or do whatever we want.. too bad these issues even need to come up.

THIS MAKES ME SICK, THE FEMALE OFFICER SHOULD OF JUST QUIT THE FORCE. EVERY PERSON CAN CONTROL WHAT BOTHERS THEM, IT IS USUALLY THE LAZY ONES OR THE ONES WHO PERFORM THEIR JOBS SUBSTANDARD THAT COMPLAIN THE MOST, AS ALWAYS WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO BE ISSUED A COMMENT CARD, OR HAVE A COMPLAINT FILED AGAINST THEM FROM A HIGHER RANKING OFFICER, THEY ALWAYS PULL THE HARASSMENT CARD.

ANOTHER LAZY OFFICER IS REWARDED BY A JURY THAT HAS NO IDEA WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A POLICE OFFICER. IT IS A SHAME.

I understand some hazing and off color jokes that could be sexual in nature. But it goes too far when you swipe your body parts on my personal things. That is no longer having fun or just 'joking' that is personal.

These guys deserve some type of punishment. It is not like she is sensitive and needs a hug, they really did her wrong if what this article said is true.

It's 2008!
Pay attention to what you read; it was the City Council, not a jury who awarded the money. The city council who had more to gain by fighting the lawsuit unless it was undeniably true. We want to be viewed as professionals and yet most of the comments stand against the victim officer, and excuse the offenders. So much for the "thin blue line", especially if you're female!

What about the other award?
I'm with CN, grow up and act professional! Besides, why doesn't anybody disparage the male cop who got more money than the female all because he defended her? Or did you not read the whole thing? The city council did the right thing awarding both officers and we should be glad for them and only disgusted with the cops who harassed her and punished him. It's not 1950 anymore!
