ST. JOSEPH, Mo. --

A lunchtime robbery with a toy gun at a Sonic restaurant scared several customers, but the incident turned out to be a hoax.

Police were called after customers reported the incident.

The St. Joseph Police Department said they had a talk with the Sonic's manager after the manager staged the fake robbery. The manager said the incident was intended as a training exercise for employees on the Sonic off of North Belt Highway.

Reports said a person came in during lunchtime while customers were eating and pretended to rob the fast-food restaurant.

The manager of the restaurant declined to comment.

Sonic officials said in a statement, “The franchisee who owns and operates the drive-in sincerely regrets any inconvenience or misunderstanding caused by the training event. Sonic believes in providing a safe atmosphere for our employees.”

Lucky the "robber" wasn't shot by one of the customers or an off-duty cop! Stupid move on the part of managment.

Stupid is putting it lightly. The manager should be demoted for that. He put the "actor" and others in jeoprady....... If they want to train for a robbery, that should be done before the business opens and have signs on the doors stating training in progress. Leave it to a robber though to think of the same thing.

That was an unbelievably stupid stunt by the manager. As a retired PO in Los Angeles, I'm armed 24/7. I hate to think what would have happened if I were there.

If the "actor" was pointing what I thought was a real gun at one of the employees, well, there is no requirement for me to ID myself before shooting. He would probably be dead.

Hoax
Damn lucky the fake "robber" didn't get stop some real bullets. Makes you wonder what he was thinking.

Many years ago a L.E. instructor at a community college in Southern Cal. walked into his classroom firing blanks. Two off duty Officers in his class killed him thinking they were being attacked.

Incredible... The manager needs to be fired and the "robber" is lucky to be alive.... I hope Sonic is ready for the lawsuits to follow....

To Ex-Copper in Merced - Could you tell me what community college that happened at? A few of the officers here would like to know. Thanks.
