GILBERT, Ariz. --

Nine Gilbert police officers were treated for heat illnesses, including dehydration, at an hours-long barricade situation late Friday morning that ended with the arrest of a 38-year-old man.

John Witt was booked on charges of assault and criminal damage/domestic violence.

Gilbert police officers were called to a domestic violence situation at 898 S. Roca St. involving Witt and his sister.

Witt's sister told police she and Witt were in an argument, and at some point before police arrived, Witt slashed her vehicle tires with a knife, said Sgt. Mark Marino with the Gilbert Police Department.

Witt's sister also reported his girlfriend was inside the home and Witt wasn't letting her leave, Marino said.

Officers were not able to establish contact with anybody when they first arrived, so they called for the Gilbert Tactical Operations Unit for help.

The SWAT team said they were able to establish limited contact with Witt, but he refused to come out of the home.

At about 1:45 p.m., Witt released his girlfriend from the home unharmed, Marino said.

At 2:12 p.m., Witt eventually came out of his home and was taken into custody without incident, Marino said.

About 40 Gilbert police officers were called to the scene, along with several fire department personnel.

Firefighters treated the nine officers for heat-related illness. Nobody was taken to the hospital.

This happened in Arizona?

Time to send you guys back to school.

New rule.

Duty kit to include bottled water/canteens.

I know our snipers have to carry water and glucose tabs.

No reason not to have this stuff in the trunk, packed and ready to go.

As usual there's some real ignorance of real-world conditions in the comments on this article.

Drink Water!
After 6 years of military service including deployment to 120 degree F in the shade crap hole called Iraq wearing full combat load I learned 1 important lesson. Force Hydrate! I understand that you can't leave a standoff or hot call (no pun intended) to grab a drink. Instead of drinking soda or thinking a gatoraid will rehydrate you you should force hydrate during any down time. 2 bottles of water to 1 gatoraid. Commercial Hydration drinks are loaded with suger to make them taste better and sell they offen mislead you into a false sense of hydration. Water Water and more water. I carry a gallon of spring water in my duty bag along with salt packets. Too much water and you get hypernutrima which can be just as bad as heat stroke. If your not enforcing you should be drinking to hydrate you for when you do get stuck on 100 plus pavement working a 2 hour long major accident. I know those free sodas at stop and go are tempting or that early morning coffee. But Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks. We have a dangerous job enough knowing at any second a bullet can rip our way or that semi falls asleep and plows through us on a routine traffic stop. Heat stroke is 100% preventable. Drink water guys and stay alive.

What a joke
These guys should be embarrassed! Phoenix PD's Swat team is out o these calls all the time and you don't see them falling out. DPS is out on the freeways on motors for entire shifts and they don't even complain. Time for Gilbert to re-evauluate their police force and maybe turn these clowns in for real men!

When it's 118 degrees in the shade, how hot is it when you're standing on the asphalt in full tactical gear? Even if you drink enough water, you still risk heat related injuries. Hydration will lower the risk, but not eliminate it. But of course, the clowns on here always have some know it all solution to everything.

Really guys
I can't believe how easily some of you guys are influenced by the MEDIA. I figured there would be some intelligent viewpoints on here assuming that there would be a majority of law enforcement submitting comments but apparently God skipped some of you when he was passing out brains. Nobody "fell out" on this call. A few officers needed an IV and had to get back to work. As someone pointed out here, these guys were in a stack in full tac gear and couldn't necessarily drop the gear to sit and have a break. Sure the article might sound like cops were on the ground crying for shade and water but come on...do you really believe everything you read in the media. If so DMX is innocent and Michael is living it up with Biggie and Tupac. And Steve ....get a clue before you post a ridiculous statement when you have no idea of the subject matter being discussed.

Support
Way to support your fellow brothers and sisters.

Every situation is different. Hopefully the officers and department learn from this incident. Maybe a supervisor on scene, will be more willing to clear one car, and get water to force hydrate the guys, or not hesitate to call on the Red Cross to assist.

All it says is 9 people were treated for "heat-related ilnesses." Doesn't say anyone had to be dragged out of there on stretchers. Steve you're an idiot. Makes me glad to work in Ohio. No heat related ilnesses here.
